One Step Closer

What a perfect time to blog, a time when I can't bring myself to sleep. But in order to write this blog I feel that it's necessary to give an overview of what's been going on in my educational life in the past few years since graduating high school.

I graduated high school in 2007 from Dominion High School in Sterling, VA. After graduation I attended Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV for one semester. I made the decision to leave after I truly realized how difficult it was for my parents to pay out-of-state tuition. Rather than immediately transferring to George Mason University I chose to attend Northern Virginia Community College to finish an associates degree.

Well, it ended up taking me a lot longer than expected to finish. The many advisors and counselors I spoke to all told me different things so I ended up taking way too many classes and way more than I truly needed. This spring semester was finally my last at NOVA. I finished with two associates degrees; one in Social Sciences and one in Liberal Arts. And as long as I have one associates degree and a certain GPA I am granted admission to almost any public college in the state of Virginia. Yes, as long as you have the required GPA and the associates degree you will 10000% get into that school but it's always a little nerve wracking because who knows what could go wrong?

Saturday I finally received my official George Mason University acceptance letter. Seeing that letter in the mail just let me take a huge breath and made me feel so relieved. I am now one step closer to my future, to what I want to do with my life.

Once I attend GMU I will be studying Communications focusing in Journalism. I love to write, obviously or else I wouldn't have a blog, so I knew it would be a great choice for me. I understand that a job in Journalism is tough to find but that isn't actually what I want to do. I want to be a publicist. Now, I've been giving the opportunity to meet a lot of different people who have been working in both fields and I have been told by more than a couple that it is an easier transition to go from Journalism to PR than it is to go from PR to Journalism, hence my focus choice.

I don't want to get too far ahead of myself but I am so excited to finally dive into the classes all related to my major. Once I receive my Bachelors Degree I definitely intend on working on a Masters. In the end, once I am finished with school, I would love to get a job in New York. I know, I have big dreams. But as Walt Disney said "All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them". I believe if I work on what I want and just stay positive then I can achieve whatever goals I have.

So what I ask of for anyone who reads this, I hope you go after what you want. Stay positive and believe.
